No. 19 Denis Andriyevskiy (Saint Petersburg, Russia), Michael Choref (Ness Ziona, Israel) Antoninianus of Vaballathus of Mountain Taurica One of the key objectives for numismatists studying classical Taurica is to identify and evaluate material evidence for military conflicts, political contacts, and trade links between regions of the ancient world, with coinage serving as a primary source. After all, they can be traced through coin material. We had the opportunity to clarify modern ideas about indirect contacts between the barbarian population of Mountain Taurica and the inhabitants of Western Asia soon after the collapse of the Palmyrene Kingdom. We introduce into scholarly discourse information about the Antoninianus of Vaballathus, discovered near the village of Pionerskoe. It is argued that this coin likely arrived in Taurica not through long-distance trade, but as a consequence of the transfer of a Roman military detachment to the region.
